Hot Stone Massage Therapy
Hot Stone Massage Therapy combines massage treatment with heated Basalt stones, which are rubbed over the body and placed on problem areas. It is a relaxing enhancement to your regular Swedish massage.
Basalt stones are naturally formed as lava rock cools after volcanic activity. All of the earth’s elements participate in the continuous formation of the stones, giving them their unique texture, shape, mineral content and magnetic field. They are most suitable for Hot Stone massage for their ultra smooth texture and heat-retaining qualities. Their inherent magnetic field helps to rebalance the body’s energy centers.
The application of heat to the body causes blood vessels to expand and dilate, resulting in increased circulation, metabolism as well as relaxation and pain relief in the muscle tissues and joints. Conditions that are unsafe for Hot Stone are generally the same as for standard massage and include extreme high blood pressure and diabetes.
During treatment, the stones are heated in water and maintained at a temperature of 130-150 deg. F. They are then taken out to cool or dipped in cool water to the temperature tolerance of the individual client. They are never hotter than the therapist’s hands can tolerate.
The flat or edge surfaces of the stones are massaged directly on the skin with only moderate pressure as their warmth brings depth to the treatment. Placement stones are separated by a sheet or towel, never placed directly on the skin.
Length of treatment is one hour long and costs $70. Receipts are issued as “massage treatment” and can be claimed with most insurance benefit companies.
